In a transformative initiative spearheaded by the Headteacher of Nankhande Primary School, Mr. Benson Kodo, and supported by community leaders, the traditional cultural institution of Gule Wamkulu has emerged as a powerful catalyst for change. Through collaborative efforts, 289 learners—comprising 142 girls and 147 boys—have been brought back to school, breathing new life into educational aspirations within the Kapiri Zone of Dedza.
Following a Teachers' Orientation workshop conducted by Story Workshop under Kankha Mapunziro Tsogolo Labwino UNJPGE III SBC Campaign, Mr. Kodo embarked on a mission to engage community stakeholders, including 23 Village Heads, Group Village Head Chief Jero, and residents. Leveraging the innovative Kankha Toolkit, Mr. Kodo demonstrated engaging activities such as "Walking the narrow bridges" and "Character cards," igniting curiosity and enthusiasm among participants.
The symbolic significance of these activities resonated deeply with the community, prompting spirited discussions on real-life applications and solutions. Recognizing the pressing issue of school dropouts, exacerbated by the allure of the nearby fishing site 'Doko,' community members rallied together to devise actionable strategies.
In a momentous decision, the community resolved to close the port to adolescents, redirecting their focus towards education—a pivotal step towards reclaiming their future. To mobilize and galvanize support for this endeavor, the revered institution of Gule Wamkulu was enlisted, its cultural influence harnessed to inspire and empower youth.
In a remarkable display of solidarity, community leaders pledged their financial support, with each chief contributing K1000 and the Group Village Head generously donating K6000 towards the involvement of Gule Wamkulu in the initiative. This collective investment underscores the unwavering commitment of the community to prioritize education and create a conducive learning environment for all.
The collaboration between educational institutions, community leaders, and traditional cultural institutions exemplifies the power of grassroots initiatives in driving sustainable change. Through concerted efforts and shared vision, the resurgence of education becomes not merely a possibility but a tangible reality, enriching the lives and prospects of generations to come.
As Gule Wamkulu dances to the rhythm of renewal, it heralds a new dawn of hope and opportunity—a testament to the enduring spirit of community empowerment and collective action. In the corridors of Nankhande Primary School and beyond, the echoes of change reverberate, transforming challenges into triumphs and dreams into achievements.
