Breaking Chains: Tiyanjane Juma's Bold Victory Over Forced Marriage

In a remote corner of Malawi, 18-year-old Tiyanjane Juma, a Standard 8 student at Ngoni Primary School in Kabitcho village, TA Kachindamoto, faced a daunting ultimatum from her stepfather—to forsake her education and enter into marriage. However, Tiyanjane's unwavering determination and the timely intervention of Abraham Youth Club marked the beginning of her remarkable journey towards empowerment and educational attainment.

The turning point came on February 17, 2024, when Tiyanjane attended a transformative Theatre for Development (TfD) performance. Inspired by the powerful portrayal of social issues and driven by newfound courage, she boldly reported her plight to Abraham Youth Club, seeking refuge from the oppressive constraints imposed upon her.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Abraham Youth Club swiftly organized a pivotal discussion meeting involving Tiyanjane's parents, village head, and relatives. At the heart of the dialogue was a fervent appeal for the preservation of Tiyanjane's right to education—an essential foundation for her future well-being and empowerment.

Central to the club's advocacy efforts was the condemnation of practices such as forced marriage, aptly identified as a form of violence against children. Through sensitization sessions, the club illuminated the legal implications of perpetuating such practices, compelling community members to confront the harsh realities and repercussions of their actions.

Furthermore, Abraham Youth Club instilled a culture of empowerment and accountability among adolescents, urging them to speak out against any form of violence or injustice they encounter within their communities. Tiyanjane's courage served as a beacon of hope, emboldening others to break the cycle of silence and seek assistance when confronted with adversity.

As a result of the concerted efforts of Abraham Youth Club and the collective advocacy of community stakeholders, Tiyanjane has reclaimed her rightful place in the classroom. With renewed determination and unwavering support, she is poised to sit for the Primary School Leaving Certificate this year—an accomplishment that symbolizes not only her personal triumph but also a triumph of justice and empowerment.

Story Workshop's commitment to community-driven initiatives, epitomized by its use of Theatre for Development, underscores a profound belief in the power of local voices and narratives to drive positive change. By partnering with grassroots actors, writers, directors, and musicians, Story Workshop amplifies community voices, empowering them to address pressing social challenges from within.

Tiyanjane's journey serves as a poignant reminder of the transformative potential inherent within every individual and community. As we celebrate her resilience and tenacity, let us also reaffirm our commitment to championing the rights of every child, ensuring they have the opportunity to pursue their dreams and aspirations, unhindered by social norms or injustice.
