Pastor Ted Kaira of New Apostolic Church from Chikowoka village T.A. Katumbi in Rumphi District is married to Susan Chiumia from Chikukalala village in Mzimba District. The family is blessed with 5 children.

Susan was found HIV positive in 2011 when she was expecting her fifth child. Knowing that Susan is HIV positive Bently Kuwali, PMTCT counsellor, started advising her that the Health Centres are providing PMTCT services which is an attempt to protect the unborn child from HIV.

Bentry encouraged Susan to go for VCT with her husband where her husband also tested HIV positive. According to Susan and her husband (the pastor) Bentry Kuwali told them alot of issues about PMTCT and the disadvantages of giving birth at Tradition Birth Attendants (TBAs). On 7th August 2011 their daughter Vitima was born through PMTCT at Katowo Health Clinic.

Vitima is now 2 years old and was first tested when she was 1 year old and then 3 months later she was tested again and was found HIV negative. The Pastor has started taking the ARV’s in November 2011. They are a happy and healthy family and they make sure to use condoms whenever they are having sex. Bentry Kuwali also told them to stop giving birth to maintain their immune system.

Pastor Kuwali and his wife Susan are very thankful for Bentry for being there for them when they were found HIV positive, he still give them tips on how they can keep their bodies healthy and what they should do whenever they fall sick.

Pastor Kayira is very open and free about his status so much that after preaching he also teaches about HIV and tells them to take his example of knowing their status in time; he also goes with Abwenzi where ever they have a function to give testimony on his life as an HIV positive person with an HIV negative child.
